APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect and promotes the social and emotional well-being of children and families.

St. Clair County Child Abuse and Neglect Council brings awareness to this month every year by displaying large blue ribbons on the Council’s office as well as tying them around lamp posts along Military Street throughout downtown Port Huron. The Council is always honored with a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month by the Mayor of the City of Port Huron during the Port Huron April City Council Meeting.

The Council also encourages citizens and other community organizations to observe Child Abuse Prevention Month by initiating their own special events that support the belief that “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.”

COMMUNITY ROOF SIT FOR KIDS

Each year, St. Clair County Child Abuse and Neglect Council partners with WSAQ-Country to host ‘Roof-Sit’ to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and funds to support the Council’s work with children and families throughout St. Clair County.

This week-long event is hosted on the roof of MiMutual Mortgage in downtown Port Huron. WSAQ Radio’s morning personality, Matt Markham, camps out on the roof of Michigan Mutual while broadcasting live for five days, encouraging pledges. Council team members and community volunteers staff the headquarters and participate in special events throughout the week to raise awareness and encourage community participation.

Support for last year’s event was truly amazing raising more than $150,000 to support the Council’s mission.
